The story is set in 1978, during the Cold War, and follows a critical week in the life of Victor Godeanu (a fictional character partly inspired by Ion Mihai Pacepa). He is Nicolae Ceaușescu’s trusted advisor, but acts as a double agent for the KGB and attempts to defect to the United States. The series Spy/Master is a six-episode political thriller set during a tense week in 1978, at the height of the Cold War. The protagonist is Victor Godeanu, Nicolae Ceaușescu’s personal advisor and right-hand man. Behind the official facade, Godeanu is a double agent who passed secrets to the Soviets for 15 years. His defection is not merely a personal escape. Godeanu is trying to save his family still in Bucharest (his wife and daughter, Ileana), while being hunted by agents from five countries: Romania (the Securitate), the United States (the CIA), the Soviet Union (the KGB), East Germany (the Stasi), and West Germany.

Godeanu is negotiating the repatriation of ethnic Germans, but his real goal is to make contact with CIA agent Frank Jackson at the U.S. Embassy. The latest episode, titled “The Trojan Horse,” depicts a desperate attempt by Romanian intelligence to kidnap Godeanu right inside or near the embassy, using tactical diversions and exploiting his vulnerability regarding his daughter.
